Let me explain. A while back, I won a one month membership for our family to Time4Learning, an online education website. We enjoyed it, but I wasn't sure I wanted to spend the money on the subscription fee. I figured certainly I could teach the same reading and math lessons with the plethora of my newly acquired texts and workbooks!

Well, I underestimated the appeal of Ed Mouse, the Educational Mouse. Let's face it, I just can't be that entertaining!

Here's what I like about Time4Learning:

Children are given individual login ID's, so they can always pick up where they left off. No repeating lessons that are too simple.

It keeps records of their progress. I can print out reports that include the lessons they've completed, how long they spent on the lesson, and how well they scored on the activities and quizes.

There are printable worksheets to back up the online lessons. These are handy when a child doesn't get a firm grasp on the concept the first time around.

Children earn time on the "Playground" where they can play games of their choosing. The system defaults to 15 min increments (15 min. spent on lessons gets you 15 min. on the Playground), but you can set the timers to whatever you like. This TOTALLY keeps my difficult child motivated!

The curriculum includes Math, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies all in one program.

My children have very different learning styles and very different abilities, yet it appeals to both of them.

It really is entertaining! Even I enjoy going through the lessons with the girls.

So whether you homeschool, or you just want to give your children a boost in school, check out Time4Learning. You won't be sorry. Emily & Claire recommend it!

Hknisleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04077900794671046732noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21392343.post-78049255148137934462009-02-23T17:36:00.006-05:002013-10-23T16:54:02.204-05:00A Book NOT to Read!Wow, I recently got an email about this book: Conversations with God. It sounds innocent enough, but it is definitely NOT a Christian book. I'm not as worried about this book as I am the related book, Conversations with God for Teens. You can find more about this book by checking on Amazon, but believe me, it's not worth your time.

Here are some quotes from the book I was able to get off Amazon:

"....Seek and ye shall find. Knock and it shall be opened unto you. " I've been seeking and knocking for 35 years. You'll pardon me if I'm a little bored with that line.
So all it takes is "Christ Consciousness" to perform miracles! Well, that should make things simple... Actually, it does. More simple than you think. And many have achieved such consciousness. Many have been Christed, not just Jesus of Nazareth. You can be Christed, too.

He also promotes a one-world government. Yikes!

His book for teens says:

God does not make judgements. "Well, the human race has been thinking that for a long time, but it's not true. It's one of those misunderstandings I've been talking about. It's an illusion. The illusion of judgement. Followed by the illusion of condemnation. It has been written: Judge not, and neither condemn.

You mean, you really do not judge? You forgive everyone, no matter what the sin?
I do not forgive anyone. That is the first thing you must understand about me. I will not forgive you, ever, for anything that you do. Once you are clear about this, you will have a new understanding of God, and you will be able to interact with me in a whole different way........

But you need us to obey you , right? There is nothing I need from you, therefore, nothing I am asking of you, therefore, nothing for you to obey. Do you think I am up here making up rules for you to follow, regulations for you to adhere to? You are making those up.

But what if I do bad things to others.....? Yet you do not need to seek that forgiveness from me. I have not found you as having done something wrong to me, so I have no reason to forgive you.

These are just some of the things I was able to get off Amazon. The email that is circulating says that the book also tells a lesbian that she is that way because God made her that way and she should go out and celebrate her differences. And tells a couple who are living together that they do not need to get married because they are not sinning against God and have done nothing wrong.

I think the worst part about this book is that the title leads one to believe it is a Christian book. Don't believe it.Hknisleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04077900794671046732noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21392343.post-56752926142033766702009-02-14T23:55:00.019-05:002013-10-23T16:59:42.682-05:00Got Girls?

Today I came across a wonderful line of books for the young girls in your life. The girls and I have spent the day shut up in my bedroom under the covers. The electric space heater in my room is reading 56, although with 10 layers of clothes and blankets on, we're surprisingly comfortable. lol It might have something to do with burning off the calories from the can of frosting we ate. Not much homeschooling going on today, other than teaching them bad eating habits. When we made the decision to homeschool, I wanted to spend more time with the girls, but being in bed together all day may just be too much togetherness.

Sooo, here's a site that tells you what your name would be if you were a snowman. Ironically enough, I'm "Muddles Cold-Bottom."

And here's where you can create your own snowman like the one at the top.Hknisleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04077900794671046732noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21392343.post-79772068019048472332009-01-04T17:21:00.003-05:002013-10-23T16:57:53.934-05:00Great Food For All and a WWII ArsenalI just found out about a new food program, called Great Food For All. It is similar to Angel Food Ministries, where you order your box of food ahead of time, at a greatly reduced price, and then pick it up on a specified day at a nearby location, usually a participating church.

Here's a look at what the $30 box looks like for January.

5 lbs chicken breasts
4 lbs ham
1.5 lbs battered fish
2 lb beef chili
20 oz beans & franks or 14 oz beef mac & cheese
2 lb broccoli with cheese sauce
2.5 lbs onion rings
5 lbs niblet corn with peppers
dinner rolls
dessert

They also have an Empty Nester Box, a Kid's Box, a Breakfast Box, a Super Bowl Box, a Pasta Box, a Cheesecake Box and Chicken Cordon Bleu.

When you check out their website, take a look at the weather in the upper right-hand corner. Great Food For All is headquartered in the town (Newton Falls) just to the east of where I live (Ravenna.) You'll see why the area between us was chosen for an ammunition arsenal during WWII. It is one of the cloudiest places in the United States! :( (It was least likely to be bombed.)

The Ravenna Arsenal employed more than 14,000 from 1942-1945. During that time it "produced more weapons for the war effort than any other plant in the United States." After WWII they continued to store munitions there, and produced them again during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Then work began disarming the ammunition. Now we are left with over 1400 acres of land that are "deemed environmentally contaminated." Ahhh, progress.

And yes, it is VERY cloudy today! lolHknisleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04077900794671046732noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21392343.post-1099494675271089232008-12-02T21:24:00.000-05:002008-12-02T21:25:26.445-05:00Something to Think AboutHknisleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04077900794671046732noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21392343.post-3498566234918685142008-11-29T02:42:00.035-05:002013-10-23T17:01:34.069-05:00Great Headband/Headcovering Patterns OnlineI recently found some "new to me" free patterns and tutorials online that I wanted to share. Trust me; I've done it the hard way too. I used to cut out all the coupons and file them alphabetically in baseball card pages in a 3-ring binder. No more! There is an easier way!

The hard part is getting extra coupon flyers. I'll address that later. The nice part is that someone's already done all the rest of the work for you! Here's how:

1) Get a box, or filing cabinet drawer to organize your coupon flyers.

2) When you get a flyer, mark the date on the front cover with a Sharpie. If you're not sure of the date, look at the tiny print on the binding edge. It will tell you the date and what newspapers that flyer was in.

3) Determine who published the flyer and mark this on the front cover also. There are only 4 major coupon companies in most areas. RP = Red Plum, SS = Smart Source, PG = Proctor & Gamble, GM = General Mills

4) File them in your box or cabinet by date.

5) Now you are ready to compare your grocery store ad with your coupons. This is actually the easy part because there are several websites that publish this information. My favorites are www.couponmom.com and www.afullcup.com. It is not necessary to pay to join such a website! There are plenty of sites where you can get the info for free!

6) Once you familiarize yourself with the websites, you will see that they usually tell you the date and the flyer a coupon was in, along with the sale price, the coupon amount and your final price. Here's an example from Coupon Mom:

10-05 GM Green Giant Boxed or Simply Steam Vegetables 7-10 oz frozen $1.00 2 $1.00 $0.50 75%

This tells me that in the October 5th General Mills flyer there is a coupon for Green Giant vegetables. The coupon will allow me to save $1 off 2 boxes. Because the sale price is $1/box, my final price will be .50/box which is a 75% savings over the regular price.

7) It is now a simple process to go to your file and clip the coupons you want to use for your weekly shopping trip.

Hints:
The contents of a flyer will vary from region to region and even paper to paper. Don't get discouraged if something you're looking for isn't there. You may have other coupons that someone else doesn't.

Some common abreviations: IP = a coupon printed off the internet, SP = a Sunday paper coupon. You will also see notes for hang-tag coupons (like on wine bottles) and tear-pad coupons (like on the cooler doors at Circle K.)

Most websites have some type of a coupon database. This comes in handy when you want to buy an item but you can't remember what flyer you saw the coupon in. Just type in the name of the item and it will tell you what flyers had coupons for that item.

Just for fun: Yes, I sent hubby to Save-A-Lot armed with 88 coupons for $1 off Peter Pan peanut butter. They were selling it for .99 so he picked up a .99 package of paper plates and 88 jars of peanut butter. He went through the checkout and his final bill was 11 cents!!! The man behind him just about fell over! lol

(Some stores will give you credit for the difference, some will not.)

Hknisleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04077900794671046732noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21392343.post-19902243503491964592008-11-15T23:34:00.007-05:002013-10-23T17:03:05.585-05:00Homemade Dog Biscuits

With the economy getting extra tight, I decided to try making dog biscuits. Now I need to do some price checking to see if I'm actually saving anything by making my own. At any rate, it was a fun project to do with the girls, and it's nice to know what goes into your pet's food. These would make great Christmas gifts for the dog-lover on your Christmas list!

Hknisleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04077900794671046732noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21392343.post-72400749125035298552008-09-10T16:16:00.003-05:002013-10-23T17:04:22.691-05:00On Headcoverings & SubmissionI came across a clip art picture today that is a beautiful example of a medieval snood.

I found this pic on The Graphics Fairy blog http://graphicsfairy.blogspot.com/2008/02/princess-katherine-of-france.html

She says it is a picture of Katherine the Princess of France, from Shakespeare's Henry V. I can't quite tell what the snood is made of. It looks too shiny to be ribbon. Any ideas? I'd like to try and duplicate it, in a much shorter length to suit my thin, fine hair. lol At any rate, it fueled my obsession with all things headcovering-related.

And since I'm on the headcovering topic, I wanted to share an excellent page about biblical submission. For the record, I am a former career-woman trying to supress my independence in Godly submission to my husband. (He makes it easy! ) :) My friends and family think I'm nuts, but I don't think they really understand what biblical submission IS. Maggie, at Frugal Abundance puts it much better than I do. http://www.frugalabundance.com/biblicalsubmission.htm

Now to dig through my yarn stash so I can start another snood!
Hknisleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04077900794671046732noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21392343.post-19597767418701315402007-09-11T20:38:00.000-05:002013-10-23T17:12:14.086-05:00Spiderchick Hat Pattern
Ok, I actually had requests for the pattern, believe it or not, so I'm going to write it out for you. lol If anyone would like to test the pattern for me, I'd really appreciate it, and I'd love to see pics of the finished products too!

Materials:
Red Heart Worsted Weight Yarn- small amounts of red, black and blue
Hook - Size F or size needed for correct guage
Gauge: 10 dc = 3 inches, 5 dc rows = 3 inches

Hat Instructions:

With red, ch 6, join with sl st to form ring.

1) Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, (ch 2, 3 dc in ring) 5 times, ch 2, join with sl st to top of beg ch 3. Unfortunately the owner has taken the site down, but I was able to find it, sans pics, on the wayback machine. http://web.archive.org/web/20051124071511/http://www.hookmeupcrochet.com/Create/Patterns/Solomons_Knot_Shawl.htm

It was actually very simple, once I learned the stitch. It is the Solomon's Knot, also known as the Lover's Knot. I used the tutorial on about.com to learn how to do it. http://crochet.about.com/library/weekly/aa122698.htm

This shawl is made using some ribbon yarn from Walmart that I was able to get for $2 / skein. Oddly, I think everyone else made theirs with two skeins. I had to run back for a third skein to finish mine. I thought I was measuring my stitches, but for some reason mine came out bigger. Here's a hint for making uniform knot stitches. Put a mark on your crochet hook to mark the length you want your stitch to be. Then you can use your hook to measure each stitch and you don't have to pick up your ruler all the time.

Now all I have to do is get my shawl away from my 5-year old! (And for those of you who have already finished the next CAL, I'll be joining you if I can ever decide what color I want to use. lol) No wonder I'm always behind!
Hknisleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04077900794671046732noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21392343.post-26355429270594275012007-06-10T11:52:00.000-05:002013-10-23T17:07:22.918-05:00Reclaiming Yarn

I thought I'd share some pics of some of the yarn I've recently reclaimed and the sweaters I have to frog. Anyway, the colors available were the most vibrant I have ever seen and it has a wonderful sheen. And, as you'd expect from anything shiny, it's pretty darn slippery. It took some perseverance, but I think it came out nicely. Now if I could only figure out what it wants to be......I don't have a whole lot, and I think I want to be able to enjoy it all the time, so......something decorative maybe?

Hknisleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04077900794671046732noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21392343.post-1140535821281757542006-02-21T10:22:00.000-05:002007-04-24T22:39:34.930-05:00Civil War Era Waist PurseOn another forum we've been discussing whether small purses were ever worn at the waist during the civil war period. Here is a potential waist purse that was listed on Ebay some time ago. Unfortunately I don't know who the seller was. Comments as to it's authenticity/use are welcome!

"Fresh from a local Maine estate - antique purse that dates to the Civil War era or earlier. Worn at the waist...like a pocket. Covered with black beads....some beads missing ( a few beads were packed away with it & will be shipped with purse). The purse is so dark they really do not show up through. Black silk lining has some lines in cloth from wear...not bad at all. One side seam needs to be reattached. Measures 7" x 6" across...side straps.... each 5 1/2" long by 3/4" wide.
Just a wonderful early purse for any collection...and they are really becoming scarce."Hknisleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04077900794671046732noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21392343.post-1140463571674856862006-02-20T13:51:00.000-05:002007-04-24T22:40:11.615-05:00Godey's Lady's Book HeaddressOk, I got the headdress done right before the ball. It didn't help that my girls swiped the second skein of pearl cotton and I found it right before we left. But I was pleased with the finished product. Here it is with the hairpiece I bought.

Here is the original pattern as it appeared in Godey's:

Fig. 1. Crochet Headdress.— This pretty little coiffure is suitable for morning wear, and is extremely easy to make. It is composed of purse silk, and trimmed with a coronet of bows and ends of black velvet. The back is made in the following manner:—

Make a chain of 60 stitches, and work a square of treble crochet, putting 2 chain between each treble. Then, for the top of the headdress, crochet on two sides of the square, 7 chain, and loop into every other treble. Repeat this for five rows, and mount this portion of the net on a pointed, wire. Ornament it with bows and ends of velvet, tastefully arranged, and finish off the back by lengths of silk looped in to form a fringe. About eight lengths of silk are required for one loop of fringe.

This might be converted into an evening headdress by making the foundation in some bright-colored silk, or gold twist, and ornamenting the front with small white ostrich feathers.

Here are the amended directions for the headdress I made. These haven't been tested, so let me know if you don't understand or if I need to make any adjustments. Thanks!

Materials:

2 skeins Brown (#801) Pearl Cotton

Size 6 Steel Hook

Row 1: Chain (Ch) 47. Treble crochet (Tr) in 7th chain from hook, Ch 2, *skip 2 Ch, Tr in next Ch, Ch 2,* repeat from * to * across. Turn. (14 Tr squares)

Row 2: Ch 6 (counts as Tr, Ch 2), *Tr in top of next Tr, Ch 2* across to last turning chain, Tr in 4th Ch of turning Ch. Turn. (14 Tr squares)

Rows 3 - 14: Repeat Row 2.

At the end of Row 14, instead of turning work to go back you will continue down the edge of your work.

Edging Row 1: Ch 7, skip 1st square and SC in next square, *ch 7, skip one square and sc in next square* across to corner. Ch 7, sc in next square around corner (do not skip a square), *ch 7, skip one square and sc in next square* across. Turn. (14 ch 7 loops)

Row 2: Ch 7, sc in top of ch 7 loop, *ch 7, sc in top of next ch 7 loop* across. (14 ch 7 loops)

Rows 3 - 5: Repeat Row 2.

End off.

Fringe: You can make the fringe using the pearl cotton, or you can use premade beaded fringe like I did. Work the frindge along the free sides of the initial tr square that you made. I attempted to work the beaded fringe in while I worked the square but it was very confusing. It may be easier to weave the ribbon through after you've made the square. And it would probably be easier yet to simply make fringe from the pearl cotton and tie it on.

Add ribbons and/or flowers to the top and attach to combs or a headband if you like, or simply pin into place with hair pins. I stitched mine to a comb-type headband because I have no hair (lol) and the beads were heavy.

Hknisleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04077900794671046732noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21392343.post-1139872428403640642006-02-13T18:11:00.000-05:002013-10-23T17:09:27.135-05:00Ohio Regimental Military Ball
I'll be attending the Ohio Regimental Military (Civil War) Ball this Saturday (www.ORMB.com) so I decided I needed something to cover up my hair, or lack there of, lol. I got a ponytail hairpiece, thinking I could twist it into a bun, but the jury's still out on that one! I'm working on a crocheted headdress from the June 1862 Godey's Lady's Book.
Fig. 1 I'm using Perle Cotton with a size 6 steel crochet hook and beaded fringe in lieu of the thread fringe. It may be too heavy though. We'll see how it goes.

Speaking of vintage crochet, I've been listing Beeton's Needlework Books on Ebay at $6.99 each. So far I'm listing Crochet, Knitting, and Tatting, but I also have Berlin Work, Guipur D'Art and Point Lace. One of the things I really like about them is that there is a picture for each project, unlike some of the vintage crochet books I've purchased before. You can see them here: http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZfrugalmama22girlsQQhtZ-1

This is the beaded bag I made to go with my ball gown. Unfortunately it's not a vintage pattern, so I can't share it here, but you can see it's a fairly simple little bag made up of regular bedspread weight crochet cotton. It's made like a rectangle with a triangle on the end, then folded, the edges sewn and the beaded fringe sewn on last. You make the strap separately and then attach it. I cut the extra beads off the fringe and sewed them on the strap by hand. I wish I would have made the strap a little shorter, but live and learn.Hknisleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04077900794671046732noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21392343.post-1139871362010939002006-02-13T17:51:00.000-05:002013-10-23T17:11:57.743-05:00Bookmarks for Valentine's

I've been working on bookmarks for an exchange on the Crafty Chicks MSN Group. They should be well on their way now, so I'll go ahead and post them here. I made them both from free patterns on the web by Priscilla Hewitt. Thanks Priscilla! Hopefully this will accomplish two things: I will clean out my sewing room and I won't be buying more yarn and fabric for new projects.........theoretically! I'll keep 'ya posted.

Meanwhile here are pics of some projects I recently completed. The first is a Women of France Shawl. Even though it's not really "period correct" I made it for Civil War reenacting. It's rather unique in that you make a really full circle and then fold it in half to drape over your shoulders. Thus it has two layers and is really warm.

The other is a purse, wallet, makeup bag and coin purse I made from a Fons & Porter booklet I received free for trying their quilting magazine. I used prequilted fabric and it was super easy. I love the fabric. I think it's still available at Home-Sew.com.Hknisleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04077900794671046732noreply@blogger.com0
